NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to send Sweden’s NATO accession protocol to Turkey’s parliament “as soon as possible.”

Stoltenberg made the announcement after talks with Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on the eve of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Lithuania.

Sweden’s NATO accession has been held up by objections from Turkey since last year.

Sweden has taken a big step toward NATO membership, Kristersson said on Monday.

“This feels very good, this has been my aim for a long time, and I believe we had a very fine response today and took a very big step towards membership,” he told a news conference.
